Fall Garden Check List
- Lawn
- Mow to 1.5" high
- Compost lawn clippings, layering with other garden refuse
- Treat areas prone to snow mold with garden sulfur
- Sharpen lawn mower blades
- Clean and do fall maintenance on lawn mower
- Garden
- Compost garden refuse. Do not leave garden refuse in the garden. The refuse will provide an excellent home for garden pests to over winter
- Rototill garden (optional) Rototilling brings insect eggs up to the top of the soil exposing them to killing winter temperatures
- Tidy up
- Clean, sharpen and store tools
- Store chemicals in a well ventilated area that does not freeze.
- Containers
- Compost spent plants
- Remove soil from containers
- Store containers upside down over winter
- Pond
- Drain pond
- Store pump inside
- Store fish and tender plants
- Pruning
- Prune after trees drop their leaves
- Do not prune evergreens, maple, birch or spring flowering shrubs such as lilacs
- Irrigation
- "Blow Out" sprinker lines
- Drain hose bib
- Store hoses, nozzles and so in an area that does not freeze
