Growing Dutch Growers
Our father, Arie (Harry) vanDuyvendyk Sr. emigrated from the Netherlands in 1949 when he was 19 years old. He saw Canada as a place of opportunity. He worked at the Belgian Gardens in Regina, as well as the Saskatchewan Hospital in Weyburn. Dad likes to tell us that he couldn't find a girl in all of Canada as special as the girl he left behind in Holland. In 1952, Adrie joined her fiance in Canada and they were married in Weyburn.
In 1953, there was an opportunity to purchase Stewart Nurseries in Sutherland. The challenges Mom and Dad faced amaze us.They were learning about prairie hardy plant material, learning how to run a business, raising a young family, plus learning to speak English. But, it was their faith in God, commitment to family, their hard work and perseverance that have created the two companies you see today.
