  • The ‘City of Haarlem’ Hyacinth produces long upright spikes of fragrant light primrose-yellow bells in mid-spring.
  • Plant bulbs in the fall, pointed end up, 4 in. (10 cm) deep and about 4 in. (10 cm) apart. Choose full sun or light partial shade, then water thoroughly after planting. In spring, keep the soil slightly moist if there isn't enough rain, but don't let water stand. A thin layer of mature compost supports growth; avoid nitrogen-rich fertilizers. Group the four bulbs for a more visible effect. When growing in containers, use a deep pot with drainage holes and protect it from repeated freeze-thaw cycles. After flowering, remove faded spikes if you don't want seed formation, but let all the leaves yellow completely. They replenish the reserves needed for the next flowering. Reduce watering during summer dormancy and mark the location to avoid disturbing the bulbs. Divide a tight clump after the foliage has dried, then quickly replant the firm bulblets. Ornamental bulbs are not for consumption and can irritate the skin; keep them out of reach of children and pets and wear gloves if necessary.
