Sold here in a pack of three bulbs for planting, it produces bulbs with white or cream-colored tunics streaked with purple and typically contains eight to ten medium-sized cloves that are easy to separate and peel. The flat, upright green foliage reaches about 60 cm (24 in). In early summer, the central scape forms a very pronounced loop characteristic of Rocamboles; harvested young, this garlic flower is tender and edible. Hardy in zones 2 to 10, Russian Red is particularly well-suited to the cooler climates of Canada.

Plant the cloves in the fall, about three to six weeks before the ground freezes completely, in sun or bright partial shade. Separate the bulbs only shortly before planting, keeping the basal plate intact and discarding any soft or damaged cloves. Place each clove pointed upwards, 8 cm (3 in) deep and 15 cm (6 in) apart, in loose, fertile, well-drained soil rich in organic matter. Leave about 30 cm (12 in) between rows. When the soil cools, apply 8 to 10 cm (3 to 4 in) of clean straw. In spring, thin out the shoots, weed early, fertilize moderately, and maintain consistent moisture without waterlogging or excessive late nitrogen application.
